Nixtamal

Nixtamal is a project by Mr. Menu, dedicated to the investigation of Guatemalan culture strengthening their ancestral origins through food.

The concept and inspiration comes from the nixtamalization, which is the process for the preparation of maize (corn), in which the corn is soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution, usually limewater (but sometimes wood ash), washed, and then hulled. As a result, while cornmeal made from untreated ground maize is unable by itself to form a dough on addition of water, the chemical changes in masa allow dough formation to cook the tortillas, tamales and other traditional mayan food.

The graphic system seeks to exalt the maize (corn) in the daily life of the mayas and give relevance to this necessary process to obtain the dough.

Each component of the graphic system was chosen meticulously, creating a brand identity inspired by the discovering of this great process by the mayans, which is the heart of the Mesoamerican culture.
